Marvel Comics had a lot of monsters in the early 70s – Tomb of Dracula, Werewolf by Night, Frankenstein’s Monster, Ghost Rider, Man-Thing, the Zombie (Simon Garth). So, of course, they also had to have a mummy. This issue featured the origin and first appearance of “the Living Mummy.” Like most of the Marvel monsters, the mummy was a sympathetic, although destructive, character.
This was also the first comic I remember reading that had multiple main characters who were not white. (It impressed me at the time.) Of course, this story takes place in Egypt, so that makes perfect sense, and even references the Egyptian-Israeli conflict.
